SYC Wine Tasting Evening 14th March

Published 12:00 on 20 Mar 2019

20 members and guests gathered in the Chart Room to take part in an evening of wine tasting hosted by St Austell Wines.

Patrick Gouge, Wine Development Manager for St Austell Wines patiently explained the principles of wine tasting to his expectant audience.  9 wines were on parade, their bottles shrouded in black jackets.  Wines were to be tasted in pairs.  In round 1 your correspondent correctly identified the first wine as a Pinot Grigio, but mistook its partner, a Chardonnay for a Chenin Blanc.

In Round 2 we had to identify which of a pair of Sauvignon Blancs was from the “Old World” and which from the “New World”

After a protein break for cheese and biscuits, competition resumed with Round 3, in which we were challenged to identify the older and younger of the wines comprising a brace of reds.  In Round 4 we had to choose the most expensive of another pair of reds, which was your correspondent’s second correct answer of the evening, but nearly everyone else got that correctly too, so no glory there.

In round 5 we were asked to identify the grape, colour, country, age and over-the-bar price of the 9th wine of the evening. I managed to identify the colour correctly, bringing my miserable score of correct answers for the evening to 3.

Surprisingly for such an erudite and experienced bunch of imbibers, no-one else seemed to score much better, although a visiting guest managed to score 60% in Round 5, and so took home the prize – a bottle of red!

Thanks to Patrick and St Austell for an enjoyable and informative evening, and to Jules McColl and Auguste for organizing it.
