Sharps Doom Bar Salcombe Merlin Week – Day 1

So, the long wait for the 61 st running of the legendary Salcombe Merlin Week is over and racing has commenced.  Saturday provided a foretaste of what is to come with a day spent rigging, meeting old chums and moving boats over to Mill bay accompanied by wall to wall sunshine, an asthmatic northeaster in the morning being replaced by a tremulous sea breeze in the harbour for the afternoon. Salcombe Yacht Club Summer Series Race 4 - 30 June 2018

Before racing got underway on Saturday afternoon, Salcombe Yacht Club’s two new rescue boats were launched, named and blessed. The ceremony was attended by rescue boat drivers in their new Spinlock life jackets, a host of youngsters who had just finished their regular Saturday morning Cadet session, Father Daniel of the Holy Trinity Church Salcombe and Sally Hosking who named the boats Shirley Tyler II and Audrey Petit II. Sally was there representing

    Salcombe Yacht Club - Summer Series Race 3 - 23 June 2018

On a beautiful sunny day in Salcombe the prevailing easterly wind combined with a somewhat half-hearted sea breeze to produce a light south easterly for the forty plus boats competing in the third race of Salcombe Yacht Club’s Summer Series. This wind direction is a difficult one for the Race Officer and competitors alike – the wind blowing across the Estuary limits the opportunities to set a true windward leg whilst there were plenty of

Salcombe Yacht Club Summer Series Race 2 - 16th June 2018

A very blustery Westerly wind made sailing both exciting but challenging as reduced fleet numbers defied the weather forecast and had fantastic blue-sky racing. Race Officer Clive Jacobs took the fleets on a first beat to Blackstone and followed this with an at times hair raising run to the distant Gerston mark which at the bottom of a Spring tide was just about negotiable with raised centreboards.  The wind gusts varied at times from 30

Salcombe Yacht Club Summer Series Race 1

567422: For the first Saturday in a long time the breeze was up, competitors enjoying a force 4 north easterly at the top of the tide. The Race Officer set a classic ‘around the creeks’ course to make best use of conditions and in the end even the sun came out to round off a great afternoon’s racing. The Cadet fleet has been well supported of late and seven boats set off

Salcombe Yacht Club Sailing Club Series Race 7 - 2nd June 2018

The first Saturday of June produced Salcombe Yacht Club dinghy racing near to its best with both sun and a pleasant estuary breeze. Race officer Nigel Blazeby was able to set a classic low tide race course with an initial beat to Blackstone followed by a very long run to Gerston. Then a challenging beat back to Salcombe and a loop in the estuary; all of which kept the many competitors

Salcombe Yacht Club Sailng Club Series Race 6 & Coast & Country Yawl Open Race report 26th-28th May

For the second bank holiday weekend in a row Salcombe was drenched in sunshine and sailors in the Coast and Country Yawl Open Meeting enjoyed three days of competitive, if sometimes frustrating, racing in the Estuary. Easterly winds predominated on Saturday and Monday but on Sunday the sea breeze effect swung the wind direction further south resulting in some light and fluky transition zones in classic Salcombe fashion.  A healthy fleet of
