    Salcombe Yacht Club Summer Series - Race 6 - 14 July 2018

With Sharp’s Doom Bar Merlin Rocket Week deemed a great success, club racing resumed at Salcombe Yacht Club last Saturday. Sunny skies and a moderate sea breeze attracted plenty of competitors to the action and over 60 boats took part in a good day’s racing. Mindful of the spring low tide and a lack of wind in the upper reaches of the Estuary, the Race Officer set a course to Blackstone and Saltstone, followed by

Sharps Doom Bar Salcombe Merlin Week – Day 5

After the highs and lows of cheering on England, there was a slightly slow start to the day, not enlivened by any sign of a breeze.  There was the briefest hint of a sea breeze forming but a lot of teams elected to walk their boats from Mill Bay to the start line. Green v Black flights.  Course 1,3,1,3,2 As if on queue, a pleasant Easterly arrived just in time for

Sharps Doom Bar Salcombe Merlin Week – Day 4

Wednesday dawned to another day of wall to wall sunshine and a surprisingly early established sea breeze cell which extended seaward to Starehole Bay and well up the harbour.  While only a F1-2 it gave the promise of some more consistent conditions. Blue v Black flights.  Course M,Z,1,3 PRO Dave Greening made a ballsy decision to send the fleet to sea in what was to prove a fair beat of nearly

Sharps Doom Bar Salcombe Merlin Week – Day 3

    Salcombe Yacht Club Summer Series - Race 5 - 07 July 2018

On a glorious sunny Saturday and at the top of the tide the summer series club racing took place with the backdrop of 120 Merlin Rockets arriving at Salcombe for their Merlin Week that starts on the Sunday. The race officer was faced with a pleasant sea breeze blowing down the estuary and unknown to him and the fleet at the time an Easterly land breeze was lurking in the direction of Kingsbridge. Sharps Doom Bar Salcombe Merlin Week – Day 1

So, the long wait for the 61 st running of the legendary Salcombe Merlin Week is over and racing has commenced.  Saturday provided a foretaste of what is to come with a day spent rigging, meeting old chums and moving boats over to Mill bay accompanied by wall to wall sunshine, an asthmatic northeaster in the morning being replaced by a tremulous sea breeze in the harbour for the afternoon.
