    Salcombe Yacht Club Festive Series

The first Saturday of the Christmas recess marks the opening race of the Salcombe Yacht Club Festive Series.  Race Officer Barney Greenhill set a course which offered something to everyone, with 30 knot southerly gusts at Blackstone and near drifting conditions into South Pool creek. The RS400 of Peter Colclough and John McLaren led off the line on the Town side into the flood tide, pursued by the National 12 of Mike Hoyle and

    New Year's Day Ramble

The New Decade started as we intend it to continue  A capacity crowd filled the Yacht Club and Cliff House to the brim for a memorable evening of feasting, frolicking and dancing culminating in bubbles on the terrace in a tolerably mild (if murky) midnight hour, made even more special by a fine display of fireworks from the beach opposite. Heads were clearly not too fuddled as everyone remembered where they

SYC Walk East Prawle 6th Dec

Despite the weather forecast, showers and winds gusting to 40 knots, about 20 keen walkers turned up at The Linhay, East Prawle for coffee.  The walk left about 10.45, with everyone wearing full waterproofs and picking up dogs from the village green on the way, including an extra one who did the initial part of the walk with us.  We headed down towards Horsley beach and then into the wind westward along the coast path

Winter Series Race 6. 7th December.

Salcombe Winter Series, Race 6. By Graham Cranford Smith and George Alexander.   Such being the way of things, the debate before departing the slipway at Batson for a promising race on Saturday morning, centred upon the etymology of the adjective: eponymous. This arose out of an earlier reference by Greening, to the most excellent appellative track, by Pink

Salcombe Yacht Club South West Water Pursuit Race

It has become a tradition for Salcombe Yacht Club dinghy racers to compete in the South West Water Pursuit Race on the day of the annual prize giving supper.  The reality were south easterly gale force winds but with the race area at least partially protected by the hills of East Portlemouth, sufficiently so for Race Officer Julian Meek to consider that racing was still on. The first challenge for the nine hardy sailors

Salcombe Yacht Club Winter Series Race 5

Race 5 of the Salcombe Yacht Clubs Winter series will not go down as a classic in the memory of either competitors or anyone unfortunate enough to be watching. Things began reasonably promisingly with a light north easterly breeze blowing over a flood tide. Race Officer Tim Fells deployed a temporary mark in Batson Creek hoping to give the fleets a reasonable windward leg up to the Yalton mark after the initial fetch from the

    SYC Winter Series Race 4

The second race of the SYC winter series was sailed in pleasant conditions with a Northerly airstream and as usual, the Salcombe estuary provided challenging areas to navigate. This week it was the region approaching The Bag at Snapes point. There was a good entry of Solos to compete in their class race and the star studded handicap fleet had the interesting addition of Roger Tushingham making a welcome return to Salcombe sailing in an

Salcombe Yacht Club Winter Series Race 3

After the first two Saturdays were cancelled due to gales, the Winter Series at Salcombe Yacht Club finally got underway last weekend. Thunderous mid-morning rain cleared away to leave some watery sunshine and a moderate north westerly breeze. Those familiar with sailing in Salcombe will know that a north westerly is the most difficult of wind directions the wind may blow down the harbour from Batson but it may equally funnel in from the
