Our Handicap Fleets are divided into three main groups:- Junior Handicap, Medium Handicap, Fast Handicap
Each group enjoys their own start during the summer season.
At Salcombe the fleet sizes have ebbed and flowed over the years and when there is a sustained increase in numbers of any one fleet then a separate start is created. We always seek to encourage class racing whenever possible.
Junior Handicap racing is an exciting place to be currently. Whilst a more detailed report on the Juniors is covered elsewhere on the website, we must recognise the importance of our flourishing Junior sailors who encompass both National standard performances as well as our up and coming novices.
Medium Handicap we have a number of Aero’s using variable rig sizes which include several of our very keen ladies. We also have Laser Radials being competitively raced by people of all ages, including a number of our emerging teenage talent. There are many of the Yacht Club owned boats racing in this group and boats are regularly available for members to expand their racing experience in these clubs boats both as single handed as well as two man.
Fast Handicap fleet consists primarily of the National 12’s, Merlins, RS400’s and newly arrived Phantom’s with an occasional appearance from our 505. We also enjoy support from a number of other single handers including the full rigged Laser. It is very pleasing to see that we now have a fleet of three phantoms and am hopeful that others may be encouraged to join the group. The standard of racing is competitive between the closely handicapped fast boats. We welcome all newcomers to join us in order to increase our existing classes as well as broadening our Handicap racing.””
