General Cadet Information
SYC Cadets is an exciting, active and expanding part of the club. Catering for ages 8-16 and run by parent helpers and volunteers, Cadets also relies on junior club members and experienced cadet sailors alike to deliver a varied and energetic introduction to sailing.
Using the safe and forgiving Smalls Cove as our base we meet on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings from early May to late September. With sessions covering the basics from rigging, points of sail, launch and recovery, capsize drills and simple rules.
Each cadet sailor develops at their own rate, without the need to attend all sessions or follow a rigid syllabus. The cadet section is responsible for a varied and up-to-date fleet of boats, ranging from the RYA endorsed Topper, RS Quba double handers, RS Feva asymmetric performance dinghies to the robust but fun RS Vision.
Whether you are a complete novice or the next Ben Ainslie you will have an enjoyable and safe time at SYC Cadets. With each session reliant on parental support, helpers are engaged either as beach crew, watch-house lookouts or afloat in one of the 3 Safety RIBs. Whatever your ability, either as a sailor or helper it is family inclusive activity that, under the direct supervision of the session leader, aims to introduce youngsters to the joys and challenges of dinghy sailing in a safe and controlled environment.
Each season includes introductory safety briefings, sailing sessions, sail-aways, discounted cadet lunches at the club house, introduction to racing and an end of season prize giving and celebratory meal.
From learning to tack to starting to race, while making friends, gaining confidence afloat and getting wet in the fresh air, sailing equips you with skills for life. Come and get underway now with SYC Cadets.
