Salcombe Field of Light ~ Celebrating 200 years of the RNLI.
October 5, 2024 - January 10, 2025
A public art installation covering over 35,000 square metres of fields opposite Salcombe on the banks of the estuary, Salcombe Field of Light will feature an array of 20,000 lowlight, fibre-optic stemmed spheres that will illuminate with a slow subtle change of hue. Visitors will be able to view the art installation from the harbour front in Salcombe or even from the estuary itself.
Organised by Salcombe RNLI, the Field of Light has been donated by the British artist Bruce Munro and made possible by the support of local landowners, businesses, and an army of volunteers.
Bruce Munro is best known for producing large light-based installations which often employ a massing of components by the thousands. His vivid memories of the Salcombe Lifeboat Crew that he met and admired as a teenager working in Salcombe made him keen to realise this iteration of his Field of Light. Bruce says, "To create this installation is a small thank you to the RNLI and their mission, To Save everyone. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea.
Salcombe Field of Light will welcome guests free of charge and present opportunities for community engagement and fundraising for the RNLI.
The Salcombe Field of Light has its own website where you can sponsor the 20,000 stems that make up the installation. Donors can also dedicate a light to a loved one or the RNLI Crews that keep us safe.
The funds raised will all go to maintaining the RNLI presence on our coastline, saving lives at sea. Each Stem can be sponsored and dedicated by the public or businesses:
In celebration of a rescued life
In memory of a loved one
In support of a life yet to be saved
In support of our Lifeboat Crews as they start the next 200 years of voluntary service,
Luckily for all you SYC members out there, our Terrace, Bar and Chart Room boasts the best views in Salcombe for the switch-on at 18:24 on Saturday 5th October. ~ Come and join us for this magical experience with a warm welcome, live music from caromatic, fabulous food, washed down with a drink or two!
