Bartons National 12 Open.

Published 15:05 on 5 May 2026

Despite two days of heavy rain, shifting winds, and challenging tidal conditions, the National 12 fleet enjoyed a memorable Bank Holiday weekend at Salcombe Yacht Club. Racing brought a mix of classic Salcombe unpredictability — from drifting car park conditions in the estuary to strong, steady sea breezes outside the harbour.

Saturdays opening race delivered unexpectedly excellent offshore conditions, while Sundays two estuary races tested tactical decisions around channel crossings and shoreline breeze. Monday brought the best sailing of the weekend, with sunshine and more reliable wind for a long final race.

Standout performances came from Tom Stewart and Isobel Stewart, who dominated the event with three race wins to take overall victory. Antony Gifford and Jo Gifford finished second, while Jon Ibbotson and Charlotte Stewart secured third.

Off the water, the event kept its strong social tradition alive with yacht club dinners, beach lunches, barbecues, and plenty of ice cream — proving that even biblical rain and seaweed-covered rudders couldnt spoil the atmosphere.
