The Plymouth Rally: First Rally of the Season
A Memorable Weekend for the Clubs Cruising Fleet
Introduction
The Plymouth Rally marked the opening of the cruising season for our club, setting the tone for an enjoyable year ahead. Thirteen boats had signed up to participate in this much-anticipated event, promising camaraderie, adventure, and the unique joy of sailing together along the beautiful south coast. Unfortunately, a couple of boats had to cry off due to family illness.
Delayed Departure Due to Weather
Originally, all boats were scheduled to set off for Plymouth on Friday. However, in true British fashion, the weather had its own plans. Strong winds made it prudent to delay our departure until Saturday, prioritising safety and comfort for all participants, but a few left on Friday as the wind started to abate.
A Thrilling Sail to Queen Annes Battery
Come Saturday, the wind had reduced to a force 4-5, providing ideal conditions for an exhilarating downwind sail to Queen Annes Battery. Spirits were high as the fleet made its way across the water, relishing the improved weather and the anticipation of a sociable weekend ahead. This was the first time that we had 3 motorboats with us, so it was lovely to increase the diversity of the fleet.

Sunday: Exploring Ashore
Sunday dawned with ideal conditions for Juju to continue her racing success with RWYC and for others to explore Plymouth and its surroundings. Some of the group and dogs took the ferry to Cawsand and set off on a scenic walk along the estuary, returning to Cremyll. The afternoon included a visit to the Orangery for tea before catching the ferry back to Royal William Yard.
The exploration continued with a walk through the streets of Plymouth, eventually returning to Queen Annes Battery.
Evening at Rockfish
That evening, many of the cruisers enjoyed a well-deserved dinner at Rockfish after a convivial drink at RWYC. The staff looked after everyone extremely well, providing excellent food and a warm welcome, making it another highlight of the rally.
