SYC Sailing FAQs

What boats do you sail?

Regular class and handicap racing is held for a wide range of dinghy classes including;

Solo, Salcombe Yawl, Merlin Rocket, National 12, RS200/400, Aero and Lasers.

Non-class cruiser racing is organised during the summer months with an active social sailing section that organise events and sailing visits to local clubs.

When does race season start?

The main sailing season starts from March, with The Commissioning Race, with racing each Saturday and, during the summer months, theres also mid-week racing held every Wednesday. The sailing season finishes on New Years Day marking the end of The Festive Season.

In addition to the regular weekly racing, there are many Open Meetings and Class Championships as well as The Salcombe Gin SYC Regatta and Salcombe Town Regatta held every summer.

What facilities are there for my family?

We are extremely lucky to house some of the best sandy beaches in the UK making Salcombe the perfect retreat for all the family. Salcombe is extremely dog friendly so make sure you bring your furry friends along on holiday with you too.

There are regular ferries running from The Ferry steps to the East Portlemouth shore where you can choose from several child-friendly beaches to spend your day. When the tide is out, you can walk along the shoreline to all the beaches on offer or when the tide is in, you can walk along the main road to reach those beaches further afield.

Millbay Beach is the largest of all the East Portlemouth beaches and thats where most families base themselves for the day and watch the racing from.

Millbay Beach - The Millbay Beach owners kindly give permission for dinghies to berth on Mill Bay. Weekly parking stickers can be purchased via the Salcombe Yacht Club website for a minimum donation to charity of £10 per boat per week.

Each boat can only stay for four weeks in any one year. We hope you will appreciate this is how the beach is kept beautiful and many people are able to enjoy  sailing from here. Please park the boats neatly, to the seaward side of the wooden posts and take all litter home with you.

There are public toilets located in the Mill bay car park and theres a shallow fresh-water stream for toddlers to play in.

There is a trolley transfer service that runs at the beginning and end of the regattas for all competitors.

Are all family members welcome at the SYC?

Absolutely! Salcombe Yacht Club is family orientated and all competitors are Honorary Members of the Club for the duration of the Regatta.

What are the Clubhouse opening times?

Please check our website, www.salcombeyc.org.uk, and social media pages for up-to-date opening times. In the winter, we are closed Mon-Wed and some evenings. In the summer we are open every day during regatta week and busy periods.

What social activities are there?

Please head over to the calendar on our website or check out our social media pages to see whats on during your visit. The SYC is a very lively, sociable club holding regular events throughout the year. Please note, most events are bookable through our website and some tickets are limited so be quick to save disappointment!

Does the SYC have a junior section?

We certainly do! SYC has a very active and excellent Cadet programme using the safe and forgiving Smalls Cove, opposite the SYC, as our base. We meet by the SYC Watch-house every Saturday morning and Tuesday evening from early May to late September.

With sessions covering the basics from rigging, points of sail, launch and recovery, capsize drills and simple rules.

Each cadet sailor develops at their own rate, without the need to attend all sessions or follow a rigid syllabus. The cadet section is responsible for a varied and up-to-date fleet of boats, ranging from the RYA endorsed Topper, RS Zest double handers, RS Feva asymmetric performance dinghies to the classic racing Laser. Whether you are a complete novice or the next Ben Ainslie you will have an enjoyable and safe time at SYC Cadets. With each session reliant on parental support, helpers are engaged either as beach crew, watch-house lookouts or afloat in one of the 3 Safety RIBs. Whatever your ability, either as a sailor or as a helper it is a family inclusive activity that, under the direct supervision of the session leader, aims to introduce youngsters to the joys and challenges of dinghy sailing in a safe and controlled environment. Each season includes introductory safety briefings, sailing sessions, sail-aways, discounted cadet lunches at the club house, introduction to racing and an end of season prize giving and celebratory meal. From learning to tack to starting to race, while making friends, gaining confidence afloat and getting wet in the fresh air, sailing equips you with skills for life. Contact Jayne in the office if youre interested in joining the SYC Cadets! (Please note: there may be a waiting list for the Cadet sessions.)

Where do I launch my boat?

Batson Public Slipway, Salcombe, TQ8 8DU. Boat Park Open 9.00am-6.00pm.

Where do I park my car/trailer?

Pre-book a boat trailer space when entering The SYC Regatta online or by calling the SYC Office, 01548 842593. Directions to Horsecombe Farm trailer parking are on the Regatta pages of the website.

Cars can be parked at the Salcombe Park & Ride. Season tickets can be bought from the Salcombe Post Office and the Tourist Information Centre. Alternatively, if you can get a space, theres Batson Creek pay and display car park.

Do I need to pay Harbour Fees?

Yes. If you are competing in a week long regatta you will be expected to purchase Harbour Dues by going to either the Harbour Authority office on Whitestrand or the Batson Boat Park Attendant's office. The Harbour can be extremely busy, particularly in the high season, so please navigate with care and consideration, adhere to the speed limits (6 knots), minimise wake, wear lifejackets, and  connect a kill cord to yourself when helming a vessel with an outboard engine.

Please note there are also Harbour Dues for Canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, & row boats so make sure you are fully equipped and showing the correct Harbour Due stickers before entering the water.

For further information please contact The Salcombe Harbour authority by calling 01548 843791.
