SYC Commodore's Atlantic Adventures and Challenges

Published 12:40 on 6 Dec 2024

Team JolieFs Atlantic Odyssey.

Nearly a week into their Atlantic crossing aboard JolieF, the crew is making excellent progress in the ARC. After a light wind start, their tactical positioning paid off, catching the new SW breeze early and securing a spot in the top half of the fleet—impressive for a yacht with the fourth slowest handicap. Now in the trade winds and setting new speed records, the team is on track for a December 12 arrival in St. Lucia.

Challenges have included a high-pressure ridge requiring two days of engine use and a crew member's illness. A mid-ocean antibiotic transfer has helped, and spirits remain high. However, JolieF made a brief stop at Cape Verde to disembark Chief Engineer John Brickwood due to a persistent infection. The team continues onward, wishing JB a speedy recovery.

Tragedy and Resilience in the ARC Fleet The fleet faced somber news this week. Crew member Dag Eresund from Ocean Breeze (formerly Mapfre) was lost overboard and, despite exhaustive search efforts, was not recovered. The sailing community's thoughts are with Dag's family and the crew during this difficult time.

Additionally, the 45ft catamaran Karolina Viking suffered catastrophic rudder damage, forcing the crew to abandon ship. Thankfully, all five sailors were safely rescued by a nearby yacht and are en route to St. Lucia. Follow the ARC Rally HERE
