Midweek Series - Race 6

Published 11:30 on 14 Jul 2023

The 6th race of the Midweek Wednesday Evening Series at Salcombe Yacht Club saw an impressive turnout of 24 boats, with 14 of them being Salcombe Yawls. The atmosphere was buzzing as the club house was packed with Merlin Rocket sailors eagerly observing the action from their elevated vantage point.

Under the watchful eye of Race Officer Robin Hodges, the course was set, 2-3-2-3. The competitors prepared themselves for an exciting race!

Right from the start, John Burn and Tristan Stone in Y170 demonstrated their skills and tactical acumen. They made clever calls on the shifting winds and swiftly maneuvered their way around Millbay, establishing an early lead over the rest of the fleet. Among the pursuers, Neal Lillywhite in his faster Hadron managed to overtake John and Tristan during the downwind leg but struggled to create a significant gap. Meanwhile, Martin Beck in Y181 found a way to break free from the pack but couldn't catch up to the leading duo on the subsequent upwind leg.

As the race progressed, John and Tristan continued to extend their advantage, capitalizing on their strong performance. They maintained their lead until the finish line, securing a well-deserved victory. Martin Beck and his crew put up a commendable effort, claiming the second position, while Neal Lillywhite settled for third place.

In the Solo fleet, Tim Law showcased his skills and determination, crossing the finish line as the first Solo sailor, earning a respectable fourth place overall.

After factoring in the handicaps, the final results were as follows: 1st place - John Burn and Tristan Stone, 2nd place - Martin Beck and crew, 3rd place - Neal Lillywhite.
