Fowey Rally 2024

Published 12:13 on 29 May 2024

Seven boats made it to Fowey on Friday 24 May and despite the rain showers enjoyed drinks and nibbles on Snow Goose in the evening.  Four more boats joined on Saturday having experienced a better day sailing.  We were also joined by the cruise ship SH Vega, which caused great concern for Jane Miller who realised there could be an additional 500 people to accommodate on the safari supper!!   Luckily it was just our 11 boats who took part in a very jolly safari supper which was superbly organised by the Millers.

Although rain persisted into Sunday 10 of us, plus Winnie, enjoyed a 6 mile walk to the village of Golant and back.  Luckily the Fishermans Arms were holding a beer festival where we enjoyed sampling the beer and cider and buffet lunch.  Whilst others remained in Fowey pottering around in the rain and eating ice cream or attending to essential maintenance on board their boats.  Miraculously the rain abated for the pontoon party with drinks and canapés before we all took the Water Taxi to Fowey Gallants, where we feasted on fabulous food in wonderful company.

Early on Bank Holiday Monday 6 boats left Fowey to sail back to Salcombe with the tide and later 4 boats left to sail West to Falmouth Bay, leaving Aqua Marine to enjoy a few days peace in Fowey.  The sailing conditions on the Monday were exhilarating and lively, although a few described the sail as like being in a washing machine.

During the course of the weekend we held a photo competition with prizes awarded to Peter Sandover for a wonderful photo of Syrinx in full sail and to Carole and James Calvert for funniest photo of them eating ice cream in the pouring rain.

Despite the weather conditions we all enjoyed ourselves having many laughs along the way.  Thank you for asking us to be the Fowey Rally masters - you never know - we might just do it again next year.
