Spring Series - Handicap Race 1

Published 18:21 on 10 Mar 2024

The Handicap Spring Series kicked off on Saturday with just two Merlin Rocket teams taking to the water.

Andrew and Tristram Squire timed their arrival to the line perfectly, while John Burn and Frances Gifford found themselves being pushed over the line by the strong flood tide and had to return to clear themselves before they could get underway.

Burn and Gifford caught the Squires by the first mark, rounded Crossways just in front, and then managed to pull out a small but lead, however the Squires quickly closed them down as they planed up on a gust while John and Frances were left foundering in a hole off the Ferry Pub.

The remainder of the race continued like this with Burn and Gifford edging ahead only to be reeled back in as the wind turned fickle and shifty in front of the Watch House. Both teams completed the loops in the Harbour with Burn and Gifford claiming first place ahead of Andrew and Tristram in second.

Of course a big thank you to Race Officer Will Henderson and his team for running the racing on Saturday, especially those unfortunate enough to be on safety boat duty!
