Summer Series Race 2 - Yawls
Published 19:33 on 23 Jun 2025
Saturday 21st June saw eleven Salcombe Yawls come to the SYC start line on a light easterly breeze. A high tide allowed Race Officer Ian Stewart to set Yalton as the first mark allowing a shifty but satisfactory beat.
As is customary, Will and Mandy Henderson emerged from a contested start unscathed, with Graham and Fiona Cranford Smith, Olly Turner and Chris Skelhorn and Greg and Clare Hoar in pursuit.
On the route back into the harbour the fleet compressed as the wind shifted to the south, the Hendersons barely lost their stride, but this moment did allow the Hoars to move into second place ahead of Turner and Skelhorn, whilst the Cranford-Smiths had their work cut out to stay ahead of Andy and Liz Savell.
The fleet was undecided as to which side to sail the run from Blackstone to Crossways, but formation was maintained by Crossways and then to the finish. Simon Dawes finished best of the classic boats in fourth place on corrected time.
