SYC Ramble - South Brent 6th December
Published 11:53 on 19 Dec 2024
Eleven ramblers gathered at the old South Brent Railway Station on a dry, clear day, fortunate to dodge the rain and Storm Darrah. The walk followed a picturesque path along the River Avon to Lydia Bridge, a Grade II-listed packhorse bridge with a waterfall beneath. After climbing uphill past Didsworthy Bridge, the group paused for coffee and Alisons delicious sticky flapjack.
Refreshed, they tackled a stony ascent onto the Dartmoor Way, passing Brent Fore Hill to Ball Gate, an original Dartmoor entrance. The trail continued alongside Corringdon Ball and Aish Ridge, offering stunning views toward Salcombe and Bolt Head, before returning via tracks and lanes to South Brent.
The day ended with a hearty lunch at the Station House Hotel & Café Bar, where friendly staff provided excellent service, and drinks were enjoyed in locally crafted pottery. Rain began just as the group left the café — perfect timing!
Festive Highlights Although this was the final ramble of 2024, some dedicated walkers enjoyed a North Sands trek before joining the festive meal on 15 December. A delicious dinner prepared by Adam made it a merry occasion — for one member, it was their third and best Christmas dinner that week!
Next Ramble: 1 January 2025 Starting 10am at East Portlemouth Ferry Steps, heading toward Gara with a guided tour of Rickham Farm courtesy of Ann and James Jones, then returning via the coast path. Details will be posted on WhatsApp or available via jbcalvert28@gmail.com. SYC members and guests are welcome — please RSVP for coffee at Rickham and book lunch back at the club.
