SYC Summer Series Race 4 - Fast Handicap

Published 16:43 on 14 Jul 2024

Course 1-7-1-3

A small group of five boats arrived at the start line and were treated to plentiful sun and a cool southwesterly breeze that was, at times, strong enough to test the toe straps.

Storm Nutall, in a Merlin Rocket, drafted her husband in as crew, but they were unfortunately late starting, so scored DNS. This didnt deter them from completing the course and enjoying some practice in their new ship.

John and Frankie Burn in their Merlin Rocket set about the task of building a time buffer to the slower boats. This was going well until they became becalmed just past Saltsone, sitting in an almighty hole that stretched all the way to Gerston. All they could do was watch as Andrew and Sheila Squire trickled along and were now back on their transom.

The light breeze eventually returned, and they were both off on their merry way towards Mark 7.

Meanwhile, Andrew Groves in his Laser Radial was holding off the faster K1 helmed  by Mark Savage. Both had also benefited from the front pair parking up at Widegates as they closed the gap the front teams had formed.

Back in the main harbour, conditions were much more stable as they were once again putting the toe straps to good use. The faster Merlin and Albacore ran out of time, though, and were unable to produce enough distance for either to claim a corrected time victory.

That honour was bestowed upon Andrew Groves in his Laser, who was awarded 1st place, Andrew and Sheila 2nd with John and Frankie 3rd with Mark Savage 4th.
