Barneys treasured Stuggle Trophy.

Published 13:17 on 24 May 2024

Thank you to Barney Greenhill for his continued camaraderie and support with the Salcombe Solo Fleet over the years.

The Photograph above taken in 1961, the Solo Struggle Prize, raced for in the Whitsun Solo Open Meeting , it depicts three very early Solos and two boys sitting on Smalls Beach. The Boys are Barney & Charles Greenhill.

Barneys love of sailing in Salcombe blossomed when he and Juanita bought Y138 from prolific Yawl builder James Edwin Stone; old Jim Stone as he was affectionately called. Barney has raced regularly in Club Series, Open Events and Regattas. Black Betty performed well over the years never better than in the 2012 Regatta being the top performing boat when she was helmed by Paul Ellis and crewed by Barney. ( who afterwards coined the phrase There is nothing wrong with my boat!

Ashore one day after racing his Yawl Barney was offered the chance to sail in a Solo Open. Capsizing at Blackstone Barneys Solo efforts, however brief, gave him a joy and a connection with the friendly Solo fleet ever after… Many a sailor has been refreshed after by Barneys generous Barney Vouchers given to Solo Sailors.

Now aged 83 years young, Barney delights in seeing his son James regular race Black Betty. James is often also doing battle at the front of the Solo fleet . This weekend is Barney is proud that his Nephew Matt Greenhill will be taking the Y138 helm, with his son Luke. Once again adding to the family legacy of sailing in Salcombe. He will however be keenly following the Solo Fleet and keeps in touch with Fleet Captain Adrian Griffin to see who will win Overall but also who will never give up and win the treasured Struggle Trophy.
